Currently there are 341,000 Americans suffering from kidney failure, tied to a dialysis machine for 2 to 3 days a week, for between 3 to 4 hours a treatment. At the end of their secession, many of them feel tired and drained, some even suffer bouts of nauseous.
Of those 341,000 people currently receiving treatment, 74,000 are waiting for a transplant, their names on the national transplant list to receive a cadaver organ. When their name finally reaches the top of this list, they will receive a call, arriving at any hour of the day or night, for them to report to a their prearrange hospital for that long awaited transplant. But currently, with so many people vying for a limited number of organs that are available every year, the wait can be between 5 – 10 years. Each year treatment costs this country $80,000 a year per person when both dialysis and other medical expenses are factored in.
I believe that if this issue is put front and center into the minds of every person in this country, if enough people stepped forward willing to gave a kidney to a fellow American that is suffering from ESRD, this problem could be easily wiped out.
I'm sure most people know that we are born with two kidneys, but only need one to have a happy, healthy life.
